2.2 Citations

Herein (Figure 2.2.1), the number of citations of Greek organizations and its evolution for the period 2006-2020 is presented. In the last five years 2016-2020, the publications of the Greek institutions received 707,087 references, strengthening the steady upward trend of the previous years.

Based on the cross-national data of the NSI / Web of Science database, between EU and OECD countries, the number of citations received by the scientific publications of Greek institutions increases throughout the period 2006-2020. With the exception of the period 2013-2017, Greece shows higher growth rates in the number of citations than the EU and OECD countries throughout the whole period (Figure 2.2.2). At the same time, the country's share in the number of EU and OECD reports has been increasing over time (Figure 2.2.3). In the five-year period 2016-2020, the share of reports published by Greek institutions in the total of EU reports is 2.52% and 1.33% in those of the OECD.

The percentage of publications that receive citations (% cited publications) is linked to the originality, the quality of the research work and the recognition of the scientists/authors. With a continuous upward trend throughout the fifteen-year period 2006-2020, the percentage for the publications of Greek institutions during the most recent five-year period (2016-2020) reaches 77.8%, a percentage above the corresponding percentages for the whole EU and OECD (Figure 2.2.4).
