2.4 Highly cited publications

A significant criterion for the evaluation of the impact of the scientific publications is their ranking among the most cited publications in the world, published in the same year and the same subject field. The relevant bibliometric indicators refer to the number and the percentile breakdown of publications that were ranked worldwide in the top 1%, 5%, 10%, 25% and 50% of the most cited publications, per year and per scientific field.

Within the five-year period 2016-2020, both the number and the distribution of the publications of Greek organizations with a high impact shows a significant improvement. In particular, 1,536 publications by Greek institutions were ranked worldwide in the 1% of publications with a high impact, 6,003 publications in the 5%, 10,472 publications in the 10%, 22,663 publications in the 25% and 40,475 publications in the 50%. The distribution of the publications of Greek instituttions based on the high impact criterion is 2.0%, 7.9%, 13.8%, 30.0% and 53.5%, respectively. In the period 2016-2020, Greece also exceeds the global average in all categories, while it also exceeds the corresponding EU performances for which data are available (1% and 10%).
